Year 2 students worked on a module that investigated the nature of film versus digital technologies, and the idea that film as a medium has a finite lifespan. You can access some of the incredible texts and case studies that they explored here
Some students responded to the ideas under discussion in a visual way - explaining theories through showing us the practice under discussion.
Tom's film Epitaph to Analogue, beautifully shows us everything we need to know about shooting on film! And he went on to create more work that was based around the craft of making a film, using analogue materials, Paraiso (2013) and Process (2014). Both of these films are excellent examples of research in practice, learning through experimentation, risk-taking and testing, and reflecting on the results before trying again.
Tom shot these films on expired film stock, never knowing exactly what the outcome would be. Both films have been critically acclaimed, Process winning 'Best Student Film' at Cornwall Film Festival 2014, and being selected for screening at the London Analogue Film Festival, The BFI Future Film Festival 2015, and the International Festival Signe de Nuit 2014 (Paris) where it was awarded a 'Special Award' for treating an important subject in an original and convincing way.
